Appreciative Coach Training
In our Certificate in Appreciative Coaching training we do more than teach the skills of coaching. While we spend considerable time on teaching specific
coaching competencies we want to grow these competencies on the firm foundation of who you are and what you believe is your core personal purpose. We can apply the Coaching Spiral to becoming a coach to create a holistic understanding of your development as a Coach and the aspects that we cover in the coach training.
Purpose:
What is your personal core purpose?
Why in God's infinite wisdom did God create you?
How does coaching allow you to fulfill your purpose in the world?
Identity:
What does it mean to you to be able to say "I am a coach"?
You will need to be able to claim the identity of coach if you want to market yourself as a coach.
Values:
What is truly important to you and what do you value about yourself?
How does being a coach allow you to manifest these values in the world?
Is the work of coaching congruent with your values?
Expectations:
What do you need in order to believe that you will be successful as a coach?
How does the coach training give you a realistic expectation of success?
Skills:
What coaching competencies do you need to develop to provide effective, elegant coaching that transforms the lives of those you serve?
What specific skills do you have that you could teach others as part of their development?
Environment:
What environmental resources do you need to be able to provide the coaching services you desire to offer to your clients?
What environmental expertise do you bring to the work of coaching and could be offered as a niche? For example clergy have expertise in understanding churches and congregational dynamics that could be offered to other clergy or to those in the non-profit sector.

Appreciative Coach Training Program Elements
The Clergy Leadership Institute provides several programs for those interested in developing their appreciative inquiry based transformational coaching skills. The following programs can also be combined into a year-long Certificate in Appreciative Coaching
Note: The Foundations class is a week-long format that presents the same material as the two half-week introductory programs. While the content is the same the material is presented in an alternative sequence to allow the coach training to be focussed on throughout the week.
Program Sequencing
While these programs are separate and stand alone some do build sequentially on material presented in the introductory classes and taking them in sequence is necessary. In planning your continuing education please keep in mind:
The Coaching Competent Leaders can be taken at any time in the sequence.
The Introduction to Appreciative Coaching program requires prior attendance in the Introduction to Appreciative Inquiry program.
The Advanced Coach Training program requires prior participation in either Introduction to Appreciative Coaching or the
Foundations of Appreciative Coaching program.
The Year-long, Weekly Teleconference requires that you have attended at least one of the programs and are committed to working on your
Certificate in Appreciative Coaching.
Who Should Attend Coach Training
While primarily oriented toward clergy and those who work with clergy and church leaders, our Certificate in Appreciative Coaching is also open to those who have substantial experience as a Coach or mentor and who can reflect theologically and psychologically on their coaching and are interested in using their spiritual resources and understanding in their coaching.
In particular the training would be of benefit to:
- Clergy who want to develop their coaching skills.
- Psychologists, Consultants and Counselors.
who are also clergy or who work with clergy and churches.
- Leaders who coach or mentor staff and volunteers.
- Psychologists, Counselors and Coaches
who want to work as Life Coaches.
- Coaches who want to work in the business world in a way that honors their values and spirituality.
Workshop Formats
The workshops will typically be conducted in a retreat setting with:
- Didactic presentations>
- Personal practice and experience of coaching exercises
- Time for personal reflection and synthesis
We limit enrollment in the coach training workshops to 14 participants to allow sufficient interaction with the trainer to maximize learning possibilities.
Costs
Each program is billed separately. Please see the individual programs for the specific program costs. These may vary slightly depending on the program and the location. As of January 2007 the entire Year-Long Certificate in Appreciative Coaching has 115 hours of Continuing Education with combined tuition costs of $3100.
